Can you please explain what you mean? What are the alternatives if there really are over 5000 packages in CTAN? Arch Linux has packaged bundles like texlive-science or texlive-music, but these seem less usable as individual packages can't be installed. Moreover, it might be difficult to find which of the bundles includes the one specific package you need.
