Trigger warning: what follows is a rant from an older person in your
midst. I don't know what's the right solution to the issues I raise, but
I do think I have a point. I hope the young developers consider these in
future design decisions.
I am beginning to think that in pursuit of flexibility and increased
functionality we end up making systems that are too complex and too hard
to discover. Users with cognitive or physical limitations have
increasingly harder time negotiating the technology:
* My 82-year-old dad has difficulties operating his iPhone simply
because there are too many options on it
* on your stereo, is netflix on Fire, Chromecast, Blueray player or
cable box?
I do like the functionality when it 'just works' but when it doesn't,
it's often a debacle. There should be a way to dial back the complexity;
show less options, etc. The old tradeoff was between simple systems with
limited functionality, and complex but capable systems. Maybe there's a
way to have both: annotate OS features by how fancy they are, and
provide a dial that selects more or less of those advanced features, to
accommodate both power users and those who want a simple, basic,
utilitarian system.
