Tidbit of history... fileutils, sh-utils, and textutils were all separate GNU projects and merged together to form the single coreutils project. https://www.gnu.org/software/fileutils/ https://www.gnu.org/software/shellutils/ https://www.gnu.org/software/textutils/ (The name shellutils and sh-utils were used inconsistently across different Linux distributions.) The stat package is really old. You can find it in old Red Hat Linux releases. At least in RHL 5.1, it appears to be code from Rich Kulawiec (and others) originating at Purdue University. The comments in the code have timestamps starting in 1986.
