This paradigm is still heavily prevalent, even in 2017, and if I was Fedora Project Leader I would be striving to destroy such a paradigm.

"Open source? Oh, that means I can go to foobar.com and download the source and compile it! Right? Why does foobar.com only display .deb files? What are those? Ubuntu? Maybe I should be using that!"

You can strive to have as many appdata files as you want, but at the end of the day we really haven't accomplished much.
