I am not sure how common it is, but I use dovecot to be able to access the mail that is stored on my desktop with both mutt and kmail. I am not sure how kmail does it nowadays, but it used to use its own Maildir structure that did not work well with anything else using Maildir. Therefore a IMAP server is a nice way of abstracting it for every mail client. Regards Till
