/etc/issue contains that information. It says something like:
Ubuntu 9.04 \n \l
(blank line)

By the way, that also works on Fedora, my /etc/issue says:
Fedora release 12 (Constantine)
Kernel \r on an \m (\l)
(blank line)
The first line is the same as the contents of /etc/redhat-release.
