Correct, the content of that LDAP attribute is placed in .qmail-$uid and is
where your @a.o email is forwarded.

asf-committer-email is a synthesized address of $u...@apache.org. It is used by
various ldap-enabled tools so that we do not expose the committer's personal
email address via systems like jira, cwiki, jenkins, buildbot, etc.

It is not editable. See
https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/INFRA/LDAP+at+the+ASF

The email address from the ICLA is -not- stored in LDAP, and is thus not
editable by id.a.o. I do not know where whimsy obtains that information.

There are very few references to asf-altEmail in our code. It is possible that
this was something under development in the past but never implemented. I will
look into this further and report back.

These fields may be useful to inform the user of what their ICLA email address
is, or what their committer email address is, but those two things are
informational only, and IMO should be broken down into two fields:

ICLA Email address on file: <address> # file a new ICLA to change
ASF Committer address: $u...@apache.org # you can advertise this

The asf-committer-email address will never be editable. It would only change if
the user changed their UID.

Hope this helps.
