now that i have a bit of breathing space:

alan helped me track down the crasher i was seeing, and it turns out it was
caused by linux-native-aio. i've now disabled it in my builds and it's working
and, a lot faster, since, well, it's not crashing & being restarted all the
time in the background ;)
