I have four pull requests outstanding that are derived from TS-3105. I've been testing these fixes in one patch. They have been running successfully in a production master installation and back ported to a production 5.1. The fixes have eliminated crashes, reduced memory usage and generally made life better. To improve understanding and make potential back outs easier, I've split the fix into four bugs: TS-3188, TS-3189, TS-3190, and TS-3191.

James reviewed the combined version in a previous pull request. Alan has reviewed the current four pull requests and is planning on committing them later this week. Since this code is making changes to the state machine and tunnel processing, I want to make sure that all people with relevant expertise have an opportunity to review and comment before the commit goes through.
