After setting up my FreeBSD VM from scratch, I've tested this patch again, and it actually works. (turns out my VM was completely hosed…)
I've pushed this patch now to trunk in three easily digestible commits, and closed the ticket. If you agree this patch is rather non-intrusive, we may backport it to our stable branches.
