The problem is, not changing the APIs to be 64-bit correct simply makes them completely unusuable. So, it's either breaking API "compatibility" or adding new 64 bit APIs.

As for the rest of your suggestions, I think it's out of the scope for this release, but I'd ask you to file RFEs for all the changes and additions you want. Of course, if someone wants to fix / add this in the next month or so, I'm all for accepting those patches.
