I heard the story about the early days, when mailing lists where new and shiny, they had a unsubscribe mailing list where they forwarded those unsubscribe emails. The sender address was subscribed to the unsubscribe list, so they could get in touch with other people interested in talking about unsubscribing mailing lists.
