Actually, I just found out that a "historical" patch exists, which seems to include you as a contributor: https://dwm.suckless.org/patches/historical/xft/ (Admittedly, I didn't know, I started using dwm recently and I didn't bother looking up old patches until now). It shouldn't be a massive amount of work to port it to 6.2, I think.
