Forgive my ignorance, but I'm not sure how to check this. I run a recent Fedora with the default gdm display manager - could gdm or its x.org configuration enable a composer? I haven't done anything to enable it myself - I just added a minimal /usr/share/xsessions/dwm.desktop to make dwm available in gdm.
