At home I use mutt with isync [1] for imap fetching and msmtp [2] for smtp sending. It actually works quite well even though I am not sure whether isync couldn't be made faster with some effort (I haven't looked into the code but it is written in C). I would like to try to work with the mmh mail client [3] but it uses the MH mail format which does not seem to be supported by the imap synchronization programs I know.
