I think the issue is reproducible using the extremely-useful 'cmatrix' program. You get a lot of stutter and 100%+ X CPU usage when running it with st while X stays at around 15% CPU usage with urxvt running cmatrix buttery-smoothly. If it is indeed the same issue we could try to compare the screen drawing in both code bases and see what they do differently to keep X at bay.
