Thanks to all for the responses. I will try the suggestions given on both pointsand report back. As for Christoph's comment about webkit: yes, I've not only checked out webkit, but I've built chromium+webkit from source. It's really unbelievable what has been done here. It's either a testament to their lack of ability at software architecture or to the mess that the web has become.
