Though looking further, it doesn't happen with my netbook (same OS, older video card), so it must be somewhat specific to the video card in my work machine. I'll dig out the specs tomorrow. And see if I can try with a newer driver in case that's the issue; I know redrawing when in vertical mode is much slower than it should be on that machine in general...
