I had similar results until I compiled the st terminfo file by running:
tic st
in the repo dir. I also had TERMINFO=$HOME/.terminfo already set up
(since I use rxvt-unicode-256color, which isn't usually preinstalled).
YMMV. Worksforme under Gentoo (home) and OpenSUSE (work).
