with '-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*' as my font it seems to work 
perfectly, albeit it's ugly. I tried '-*-fixed-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*' 
and it only half worked -- one of the characters I use isn't recognized 
but the rest are. Is there a way for me to find out precisely which 
fonts support the characters I'm looking for?
