One benefit of using libdraw (which will be used for dmenu 4.2 and dwm 5.9) is that this functionality can be centralised. If someone were to write a simple clean xft patch for libdraw it could be useful, perhaps even integrated into mainline. My personal copy of dwm uses a libdraw back-end, so if someone wants to take advantage of this (and the bugfixes it brings) just ask and I'll make a diff. Thanks, cls
