I use profont and static const char font[] = "-*-*-profont-*-*-*-12-*-*-*-*-*-*-*"; works fine for me. Although profont shows up in xfontsel for me too, so perhaps you need to run fc-cache, mkfontscale, mkfontdir, or some other font utility.
