IIRC our plan was to release 1.9.0 in February/March, branching 3 months before that (Nov/Dec), and releasing an alpha 3 months before _that_.
That schedule would have us release an alpha in about 3 weeks. (i.e., a tarball rolled from trunk and released without compatibility or feature-will-remain promises)
