Thanks [~BoglarkaEgyed] for the response. The main reason why I would like to
update is because most cloud providers run Hadoop 2.9.x
The latest stable release of GCP's Dataproc is on Hadoop 2.9.2:

For AWS's EMR is it 2.8.5:

For Azure HDInsight it is 2.7.3:

Right now I could bump the version, and the CI just ran fine, so I don't expect
too many issues with the different hadoop 2.x versions. My preference would be
to bump to 2.9.2 first, and then I'm also happy to work on bumping to Hadoop
3.x.
