Could you specify what problems you're seeing? there is nothing special about the CDH distribution at all.
The latest and greatest is 1.1, and that is what is in CDH 5.2. You can certainly compile even master for CDH and get it to work though. The safest build flags should be "-Phadoop-2.4 -Dhadoop.version=2.5.0-cdh5.2.1". 5.3 is just around the corner, and includes 1.2, which is also just around the corner.
