It's how we refer to a field within a flow when the particular field is not known at compile time. It's necessary to have it working correctly to, for example, parse NXM (or OXM, given that Simon Horman's work-in-progress patches for OXM support, also build on it) from the wire protocol. You should therefore fold patch 3 in with patch 2.
