Thank you for the example. I didn't know of any package that supported both, before now. DKMS support is something that we want upstream, we just haven't made time to do it yet. In the meantime, the Ubuntu version of the packaging does have DKMS support, so you could use that. I haven't looked at it yet so I don't have an idea whether it is suitable to just include directly in Debian.
