Sounds like Ubuntu comes with OpenJDK "alternative" preinstall, this
error is reported using:
fa...@catullus:~$ java -version
java version "1.6.0_0"
OpenJDK Runtime Environment (IcedTea6 1.6.1) (6b16-1.6.1-3ubuntu1)
OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (build 14.0-b16, mixed mode)

i expect that OpenJDK will work also but haven't really tried it.
You can try it with a Sun JDK/JRE and you can try to build your
extension on Ubuntu directly and can check if NetBeans uses the same Java.
