The truth is, you are not alone in this. See http://qa.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=35579 There is a patch available, and (I assume) there is a consensus that this change is desirable. It's just a matter of having someone work with the file format people to make the necessary change. I was the last one who spoke on this issue, and since then there is no real progress.
