Which desktop environment do you use?

Linux has so many different ones and on Ubuntu 18.04 (Gnome) it looks
like this [1]. The main icon is the Orb and all applications are grouped
under it.

This is not caused by the icon change itself but by an additional entry
in the startcenter.desktop file.

"StartupWMClass=OpenOffice 4.1.6"

If you remove it you get the "old" behavior (but also a blurry icon when
doing Alt-Tab).

Somehow on purpose, as it looked OK on all systems I could test...

Do you have by any chance something like "icon grouping" enabled?

I would only call them higher resolution icons... ;-)
