Just to be clear:

    SetUserAllowsLinkUpdate(pLink, GetUserAllowsLinkUpdate(parent));

is OK if parent == NULL? That is, does GetUserAllowsLinkUpdate()
work OK if passed NULL? Or, if parent is NULL, should we skip
calling SetUserAllowsLinkUpdate()?
