I think, Apache OpenOffice will fit to your interests. You can start
with solving little problems and deepen as your time allows. The Apache
OpenOffice code has a wide area of aspects. We track the issues in
https://issues.apache.org/ooo/. From your background I think, you should
start in Calc or with charts. Please write if you need some suggestions.
