The Word Count Statusbar Controller runs quite nicely. It has one unfortunate side effect - on OO 4.1.x it renders Select All (Ctrl A) in Writer extremely slow. On a test 125K word file, when Word Count is enabled, Select All takes 12 minutes; without it, Select All is instantaneous.
Inspection of the running processes with TaskManager shows an entry for OpenOffice 4.1.1 using 603 MB memory and one CPU core at 100% and another entry for soffice using 640 KB memory and about 3-5% CPU. I'm running OO 4.1.x on xubuntu 14.04 (64 bit). I've checked out by using different nvidia drivers and changed graphics board to an ATI.
