I know, but a conference that have many talks, paid expensively, by
companies, cannot be taken serious when the see volunteers at the same
level. I was actually asked if ASF could not pay. The conference organizers
earn money on the event and that does not seem really compatible with
volunteer work.

I would not like to use our budget for that type of event. Likewise I have
been out speaking at a local university (and go to a highschool in
september), where I paid my own way and they gave lunch.

Actually not my idea, but something a company I worked did regulary, and it
worked very well.
