Too bad ;-) that you don't tell us:
a) from where you tried to download
b) if you see any error message or hint text
c) which OS X version you are using.
But from your description it sounds as you are running 10.6 or older and
tried to download from "www.openoffice.org/download/".
Since AOO 4.1.0 there is no longer support for older OS X systems. This
should be visible in the green box and as alternative you are offered
with the previous version 4.0.1.
