Something to think about, if we want a bigger task done.
Indeed this is a good option. Of course, Apache does not pay for
developers and doesn't accept targeted donations, so the way it can work
for us is (exactly like the Apache Tapestry case) that an individual or
a group asks for donations, outside the project, for a dedicated
development task.
Code will then have to pass the usual review and QA steps before it is
accepted and released, so developers should mention that they cannot
guarantee that the project will accept the code.
And a standard disclaimer, from the dev@community thread, is:
---
Disclaimer: This campaign is done by me, FOO, as an independent
individual, not by the Apache Software Foundation nor the Apache
OpenOffice project. I'm not representing the Foundation in any way in
this campaign nor does Apache endorse it. The Foundation has a policy of
not paying for development work. All its members are volunteers. Any
code I'll write or change will pass the usual OpenOffice team approval
process.

Raphael had announced a similar initiative on this list, but I don't
know if the funding target has already been reached.
Regards,
Andrea.
