Is technically impossible to mess all your spreadhseets unless they were conciously saved like that. I have dealt with corrupt files, and usually the files are usually at fault of other external things like incomplete downloads/transfers. Also OpenOffice has a backup path that saves all documentes saved on a specialize internal path in case you get to loose any of it. Finally just as regular computing practice you should always hold backups of everything, regardless of the software you use.
