A few quick words, wearing my IBM hat. I'd like to draw your attention to a new extension that we (IBM) have published, and what this means:
http://extensions.openoffice.org/en/project/ibm-connections-connector-apache-openoffice We sell a popular social business platform called Connections, which customers can install on their own hardware or run our hosted version. It has everything from microblogging to forums, blogs, file sharing, profiles, etc. Companies use it to help their employees work together. With this "Connector" extension we enable Apache OpenOffice users to access much of the IBM Connections functionality right from the Sidebar UI of AOO 4.0. They can download documents, share them, post status updates, etc., all without leaving their document. This makes their work easier, and the user experience more seamless. So what does this mean? 1. We're *not* promoting a separate version of OpenOffice. There is no "IBM Edition" or "IBM OpenOffice". Historically, these things, whether Novell Edition, or Oracle Open Office, have created conflicts and tensions. Our goal is to make the version of AOO that anyone can download from the www.openoffice.org stable enough for anyone, including our customers, to run. That aligns our interests. 2. The extensibility mechanisms of OpenOffice are enough for us, or anyone else, to integrate their products with OpenOffice. 3. We are actively promoting Apache OpenOffice to our customers. If you know IBM then you know that this is done only because it makes business sense. It is because we see strong customer interest in Apache OpenOffice. I should mention, in a similar direction, we now also have integration support for IBM ECM (Enterprise Content Management): http://www-01.ibm.com/software/info/channel-solution-profiles/OpenOffice_Integration_IBM_ECM.html Regards, -Rob --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: dev-unsubscr...@openoffice.apache.org For additional commands, e-mail: dev-h...@openoffice.apache.org
