Hi James, you have send your mail to a mailing list and you will receive answers normally only when you are subscribed to this list.
I use OpenOffice for many many years on Mac as well, it is my main platform and I can't reproduce or confirm your described problems. And you are correct we as developer would never accept such a behaviour. The only recommendation I have at the moment is that you try a cleanup of your user profile and try again. Rename in your user profile ~/Library/Application\ Support/OpenOffice or OpenOffice.org and start the office again. A new user profile will be created.
