Short update:I have checked in the drafts of API interfaces and configuration schemas that I think are necessary for implementing the sidebar.
On the wiki page http://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/Sidebar you can find an outline of the implementation design in section 4 and an outline of the implementation work in section 5. Sections 5.1 and 5.2 contain links directly into the SVN repository for easy reference of the new interfaces and schemas. Please feel free to review them.
