I agree that building presence on other platforms is desirable. But my 
suggestion is not mutually exclusive to that.
The old list is simply deprecated and every new email from there is replied to 
"remember this list is deprecated". The auto-reply would at least solve that. 
Not allowing further subscribers also avoids sending users the wrong way. Not 
allowing further posts would enforce the use of the correct mailing list (I 
understand that is the goal).

Anyway, this can be done in stages. Auto-reply and disallow subscribe first (to 
avoid growing the old list and encourage transitioning). Disallowing posts 
would be like disabling the group completely, so that would be the final step.
