Therefore, "swallowed" in the sense of "not recreated on checkout" i.e. "removed/erased/deleted". There appear to be some solutions (metastore?), but creating a symlink seemed the easier route. on disabling: sure, having things optional is usually a good thing, be it just for backwards compatibility.
