Hooray - got the IBM JDK 1.3. working.
/opt/IBMJava2-131/bin/java -version

Classic VM (build 1.3.1, J2RE 1.3.1 IBM build cxia32131-20070913 (SR11)
(JIT enabled: jitc))
For those interested I did a
export LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.6.30.5
which matches my kernel version
