Just to echo the other issues To change your font/appearance go to Myzone or select wallpaper/font or appearance (not got moblin open here now) and then you can sort your wallpaper, themes, fonts etc etc
Head over to Slaine.org for a good guide to install some development tools as suggested elsewhere he shows you how to install development tools etc as well as a few others.
