WIll I have to recompile X?

uxlaunch launches X as the non-root desktop user. If you wanna run X
as root, either you can start it as root on cmdline or use gdm to
replace uxlaunch. No need to recompile X.

I'm not entirely sure that's what he meant. You don't even need to use gdm to run the desktop as root either: Just edit /etc/sysconfig/uxlaunch and add/change the 'user=' line to read 'user=root'.
