Actually it *is* as simple as open a ticket at m2e:

but if one just don't let people know about it it might sounds harder
than it is :-)
Funny enough this is a good example why I think integrate this in maven
would be much more appropriate as it is much more visible, looking at
the commit history even committers/contributor of maven and the new
plexus-build-api repository do intersect ... so actually more effort put
here (into something claimed not useful at all) by the same people that
could/would have contributed to maven directly as well.
