they have to be informative but short. More of a subheader than an
explanation. Think of it like a "Positioner" for the page that it's

at. It has to "sell" the link.
The current 'subtitles' don't do this?

I think they do. They're short and to the point. And they are clear, not confusing, explaining precisely where the link will lead.

I want to learn more about OpenOffice.org
What is OpenOffice.org? And why should I use it?

I want to download OpenOffice.org
You can download a copy for {DETECTED OS} right now, or we can show you other ways of getting it

I need help with my OpenOffice.org
Help is at hand whenever you need it

I want to do more with my OpenOffice.org
Get professional templates, clip-art and extensions to get more from your OpenOffice.org

I want to participate in OpenOffice.org
OpenOffice.org is made with the help of people from all over the world. We'd love for you to join us!

The only one that seems over-long to me is the one for the DO MORE link. Somthing simpler, such as "Extras and add-ons for OpenOffice.org" seems a bit cleaner.

And I don't think we need to differentiate between new users and upgraders. Each knows who they are and why they are there. The simple "you can download now" statement covers both quite nicely.
