Hi,
I'm not shure this is really a marketing issue, but since I'm on the
marketing mailing list, I'll introduce my proposal here...
As an OOo freak and Linux user, I have often felt frustrated about the
fact that most Linux ditributors do not distribute the standard OOo with
their distro but some sort of "Enhanced" OOo (though, usually its' not
possible to tell what the "enhancements" really are). This causes many
problems - one of them is that i makes it much more difficult to support
OOo on Linux than on Windows.
I think Louis mentioned the problem when he was on the LinuxForum
conference in Copenhagen last spring.
If there's a common consensus in "OOo-land" that this is a problem, I
suggest we begin to think about what we can do to change it. Of course
the LGPL gives the Linux distributors the right to do (almost) whatever
they want to the OOo source code, so we can't force anyone to do what we
think they should do. Still I think that we might be able to persuade
some Linux distributors to work closer with OOo, which means taking our
product as it is without adding their own "salt and pepper" to it. One
of the ways to "persuade" them could be that we mentioned the
"recommended Linux distributions" from an OOo point of view on the
www.openoffice.org.
Comments, please?
Best regards,
Finn G. Larsen
