Yesterday, I had a very good meeting with the Qualifications and
Curriculum Authority which regulates all UK qualifications. There seems
to be no particular obstacle in getting INGOTs into the National
Qualifications Framework. Also if we are accepted as an Awarding Body we
will be able to propose other FLOSS certifications as long as they are
seen to be not just replicating existing provision. It would be possible
for instance to have a recognised qualification in supporting migrations
from closed to open source software or very much more specific OOo
certification.
This is a really big deal. If INGOTs gets this official status it would
be much easier to get schools into it. And in turn, INGOTs is an
excellent opportunity to promote OOo and open source because:
* It is very *scalable*. It can grow a lot.
* It teaches kids about open source, open standards and compatibility.
These kids will grow up being aware of alternatives, being well informed
about open source, and understanding issues of compatibility.
* It gets a lot of teachers and kids to install OpenOffice.org at home,
where it can also be used by their families. And they learn that the
software is free to copy (this hammered down a lot). This means that
those families are more likely to make a copy and give it to a friend
than someone who uses the software but doesn't fully grasp the fact that
it can be freely copied.
Cheers,
Daniel.
