By the way, the following activity items help a lot while one acts as a
OpenOffice.org lobbyist targeted to media. I'm adding an effectiveness
ranking next to each item, also.
- Send "Did you know" type of e-mails to country wide editors: The
e-mails can be found anywhere. Just look at the journals, watch TV,
search Google etc. A warm opening message, followed by a two-paragraph
information about OpenOffice.org benefits, not-so-technical features
will alert the editor when she sees the word "OpenOffice.org" elsewhere
(rank: 7/10).
- Send localized OpenOffice.org news mails and official bulletins: Take
your time - you are not in a hurry. Most probably the editors didn't
hear the news you sent. Being late for 2 days is OK (8/10). Try to
include success stories in your e-mails.
- Just hang up the telephone and speak: Do not be ashamed of this. If
you don't talk to programme makers, columnists, they won't know you, and
OpenOffice.org in general. If you can't reach them, try next week,
another week, another week. Keep a log of whom you talked and when (9/10).
- Use your title: If you are resposible of the marketing activities of
OpenOffice.org in your country, speak up and mention this several times
(ok, don't bother her.. :-) (8/10).
- Ask for other opportunities: If you are interviewed and/or show up on
the radio/TV, this means that you are candidate for another. Ask your
mate if she knows F/OSS knowledgable editors around her and request to
act as a mediator (9/10).
Please note that you may not get an immediate effect. Just be insistive
and continuously try to get in touch, say, every one month - technology
editors usually try hard to hunt for context rich news and you're really
doing good if you supply them OpenOffice.org related materials. They'll
be grateful to you :-)
